T
he Italian Street Painting Festival is an annual fund raiser for the group Youth in Arts. It features artists from all over the world applying chalk in colorful, creative ways onto freshly laid asphalt.

Every year, for a few days in mid-June, several streets surrounding the Mission San Rafael are closed to vehicles for the festival, which includes a variety of food, drink, live music, and of course Street Painting!

Visitors can walk around and watch the artists at work under the blazing sun. Many artists reproduce classic works of art, while others do their own original designs. One area is set aside just for children. In 2003, a huge area was reserved for many "Madonnari" to collaborate on a large scale reproduction of Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling - absolutely AMAZING!

At the conclusion of the weekend event, the ephemeral street art is washed away, so I thought it would be a good idea to take lots of pictures and preserve it on the web. The menu at left lists the images I took in 2003 (I regret not knowing the artists' names or the actual titles of their images). Just click a title to display the image and ENJOY! - then email me to let me know what you think of this web site.
